Turquoise
Turquoise, a hydrous phosphate mineral, is celebrated for its striking blue-green hues. Also referred to as "sky stone" or "stone of protection," Turquoise has been treasured across cultures for centuries. In spiritual traditions, it's believed to bring tranquility, aid communication, and connect the earthly and spiritual realms. Turquoise has a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and Persians.
Approximatley 98% of all Turquoise in the world have been stabilised in some way. Stabilisation is a nessessary process for turquoise due to the stone being porous and soft, only 5-6 on the Mohs scale. Most turquoise will just break apart without stabilisation. The stabilisation of Turquoise dates back to ancient egyptian times. They would heat beeswax and let stone sit and soak the wax into its pours to harded.
Stabilised Turquoise, sometimes called Natural Turquiose has been put under pressure with a clear epoxy resin which hardens the rock. Sometimes dye is added if needed. Reconstituted or Compressed Turquoise is a soft turquiose with chalk-like consistency. The powder is dyed and stabilised. The resin, under pressure absorbs into the rock.
Naturally found in arid regions, major deposits are found in countries such as the United States, Iran, and China. Its vibrant coloration has made it a popular choice for jewellery and decorative objects. Turquoise is also esteemed for its cultural significance among Native American tribes. This mineral's enduring allure and spiritual significance continue to make it a cherished gemstone worldwide. It's also the Birthstone for December and the 11th Anniversary stone.
